Leucorrhoea (Vaginal Discharge): Causes, Symptoms & Homeopathic Remedies

Overview

• Definition: Leucorrhoea (whites) is a whitish discharge from the female genitals and represents an abnormal condition of the female reproductive organs.

• Normal Flow vs. Infection: Normal internal flow involves secretions from the uterus and upper vagina flowing down to be reabsorbed in the lower vagina. Leucorrhoea is caused by infection in these tissues and various other factors.

• Commonality: It is a very common condition affecting many women and sometimes even small children.

• Prognosis: If left untreated in the initial stages, it can lead to great weakness and grave complications, and the condition may continue for weeks or months at a time.

Symptoms & Progression

• Initial Stage: A slight discharge of whitish matter escapes drop by drop without any unpleasant sensation.

• Advanced/Neglected Stage:

  • The discharge increases in quantity (becoming excessive) and changes color to greenish, yellowish, or dark brown/almost black.

  • Causes pain and excoriation of the parts.

  • General health suffers: failing appetite, weak pulse, pale and bloated face, dull and heavy eyes surrounded by yellowish/bluish circles, and impaired vision.

  • Other physical signs: Constant pain in the back, loins, lumbar region, and calves; dragging sensation in the abdomen; lowness of spirits; and excessive debility.

    

Causes & General Care

• Exciting Causes: Numerous causes exist; anything affecting general health can produce it. Cases can stem from foreign bodies in the vagina, such as the long-term use of an intra-uterine device meant to prevent pregnancy (these cases cannot be cured until the exciting cause is removed).

• Cleanliness: Sometimes caused by inattention to cleanliness. Syringing the parts with lukewarm water is beneficial.

Treatment Remedies

• Hydrastis: Thick, yellow, and tenacious discharge with great weakness and constipation.

• Alumina: Very ropy, tenacious, yellowish, and bland mucus rich in albumen that causes significant exhaustion.

• Graphites: Profuse, thin white mucus that comes out in gushes and is excoriating. Patients are constantly cold.

• Natrum muriaticum: Copious discharge of transparent, whitish, and thick mucus, or acrid discharge with a yellow face, headache, and a disposition to diarrhea with slimy evacuations and colic.

• Aletris: Associated with extreme constipation and weak digestion.

• Pulsatilla: Thick, yellowish, green, and bland discharge occurring chiefly immediately before, during, and after menstruation. Produced by fright or occurring in young girls who have not yet menstruated; discharge is thick like cream, sometimes corrosive, and attended by itching.

  

• Calcarea phosphorica: Used for little girls; profuse, milky, and purulent discharge with itching and burning.

• Borax: Clear, copious, and albuminous discharge with an unnatural heat, acrid nature, and swelling of the labia, occurring midway between menstrual periods.

• Kreosote: Very acrid, irritating, profuse, and watery discharge that excoriates the parts. Includes yellowish leucorrhoea, great debility, and painful micturition.

• Calcarea carbonica: Burning, itching leucorrhoea that is worse before menses. Suited to lymphatic, light-complexioned women with copious menses prone to returning too soon. Discharge is milky, often passes with urine and upon lifting, and is accompanied by itching, burning, shooting pains through the parts, and falling of the womb. Also valuable in corrosive leucorrhoea of young children.
