Start ConsultationCoffea is a prominent homeopathic remedy characterized primarily by extreme sensitiveness. It is specially suited to tall, lean, and stooping persons with dark complexions and a temperament that is both choleric (passionate) and sanguine (active and optimistic). Derived from the unroasted green coffee bean, Coffea cruda was profoundly studied and introduced into homeopathy by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. The entire nervous system of a Coffea patient is strung incredibly tight, resulting in an exaggerated, highly reactive response to everyday stimuli.
When assessing the impact of raw coffee on the human body, its effects on the aged are particularly notable. Drinking coffee often increases uric acid production in the elderly, causing kidney irritation alongside muscle and joint pains. Because older individuals have an increased susceptibility to the stimulating actions of both coffee and tea, their use should be strictly curtailed or carefully watched. As a homeopathic preparation, however, Coffea is a premier remedy for addressing the adverse effects of prolonged fatigue, continuous night-watching, or mental overwork in highly driven individuals.
Core Constitution and Nervous System
The emotional state of the Coffea patient is intensely hyperactive. You will often see them tossing about in sheer anguish, a state closely resembling the remedy Aconitum napellus (Aconite). However, a unique hallmark of Coffea is its relationship to joy. Excessive joy or a "pleasant surprise" paradoxically results in profound suffering, leading directly to sleeplessness, nervous excitement, severe neuralgia, muscle twitching, toothaches, facial aches, a flushed red face, and a hot head. The mental state is so acute that severe ailments can also arise from sudden fright, sudden grief, or disappointed love, causing the nervous system to essentially short-circuit from any emotional extreme.
Sleep is severely disrupted by this overactive nervous system. The patient will typically sleep only until 3 AM, after which they fall into a state of restless dozing rather than deep sleep. Sleep may also be disturbed by an irritating itching of the anus. During these early morning periods of insomnia, the mind is exceptionally clear and teeming with racing thoughts, leaving the patient feeling a profound physical and mental agility despite the late hour.
Sensory Hypersensitivity and Pain
Perhaps the most striking feature of Coffea is the excruciating sensitiveness of the senses, particularly hearing, which is frequently accompanied by pain (similar to Nux vomica). The patient's hearing becomes unnaturally acute; they can hear clocks ticking on distant church steeples—a symptom shared with Opium, China, and Nux vomica.
This hyper-acuity means the patient is immensely aggravated by noise. Facial pains, toothaches, headaches, and leg pains are all fiercely aggravated by sound. It is a peculiar and consistent symptom that pain in the extremities is worsened by noise. The patient will express that noise disturbs them so profoundly they simply cannot bear the pain. Opening a door or ringing a doorbell produces great suffering. They hear sounds that healthy individuals cannot perceive, and their pain is noticeably worsened by the distant sound of voices in another room or the noise of playing children.
This hypersensitivity extends deeply into the tactile senses. There is a painful, raw sensitiveness of the skin. The patient experiences intense stinging, burning skin pains accompanied by redness, heat, and a coarse rash that comes on suddenly and leaves just as suddenly. The sensitive part of the skin is fiercely aggravated by cold air, any wind, fanning, and motion, yet, paradoxically, it is also aggravated by warmth. The pains of Coffea are invariably described as absolutely unendurable, driving the patient to despair and weeping. This extreme pain intolerance is often compared to Chamomilla, but the Coffea patient is characterized by nervous excitability rather than angry irritability.
Systemic Symptoms: Head, Digestion, and Circulation
Head pains feel as if the brain were being torn to pieces, or as if a nail were forcefully driven into the head, and these headaches are distinctly worse in the open air. These headaches are often one-sided (migraine-like) and are described by the patient as a feeling that the head will burst from a violent rushing of blood. The face may suffer from prosopalgia (facial neuralgia) that severely extends to the molar teeth, ears, forehead, and scalp.
The mouth and teeth present classic Coffea symptoms. The patient exhibits hasty eating and drinking, yet cannot tolerate warm tea, as it intensely aggravates the pain (a strong particular symptom). A tight pain in the teeth is worsened by noise, strong smells, and narcotics. There is a rending, tearing toothache brought on by exposure to cold, emotional shifts, excitement, or joy, which is aggravated by motion and warmly prepared food. However, there is a fascinating keynote: neuralgic toothache is entirely and completely relieved by holding ice or ice-cold water in the mouth, but severe pain returns the exact moment the water becomes warm (which is the exact opposite of the remedy Manganum).
In the digestive system, there is complete intolerance of tight clothing. The patient is particularly aggravated after consuming wine or liquor. Even a very small amount of wine intensely amplifies nervousness, producing sleeplessness, a flushed face, feverishness, and great excitement. This reaction is not necessarily intoxication, but rather profound nervous agitation.
The circulatory system mirrors this nervous turmoil. The patient suffers from violent, irregular palpitations, especially following excessive joy or a sudden surprise. This is accompanied by a rapid, high-tension pulse and, in severe cases, urinary suppression. In the extremities, the patient may suffer from crural neuralgia (thigh and leg pain) that is worse from motion, in the afternoon, and at night, but notably better from applying firm pressure.
Female Health, Pediatrics, and Modalities
The female Coffea patient experiences menses that are too early and unusually long-lasting. There is immense pain accompanying the cycle, and large, black clots of blood are discharged. Interestingly, neuralgic toothaches frequently occur during the menstrual period. The vulva and vagina are remarkably hypersensitive; the woman can scarcely tolerate wearing a sanitary napkin during menstruation (a symptom shared with Platinum). Additionally, there is often voluptuous itching in the genital region. In cases of labor, the uterine pains are so severe and disproportionate that the woman becomes frantic, extremely fearful of death, and shrieks in agony.
In children, Coffea is highly effective for a short, dry cough associated with measles, particularly in nervous, delicate children. The Coffea child is extremely sensitive and highly prone to taking cold. When comparing pediatric remedies, it is helpful to contrast Coffea with Belladonna. Where Belladonna is indicated, the child may be sluggish, stupid, and simply want to sleep. With Coffea, the child is wide awake and in a state of wiry excitement.
Generally, the Coffea patient is extremely sensitive to cold, wind, and cold weather. Their overall complaints tend to come on in cold weather or from exposure to cold air. Being "worse from cold" is a strong general modality. They possess a deep aversion to cold air, open air, and wind, unless the environment is very warm and perfectly still.
Aggravations (Worse from): Excessive emotions (especially joy), narcotics, strong odors, noise, open air, cold, night, and motion.
Ameliorations (Better from): Warmth, lying down, holding ice in the mouth (for toothache), and pressure (for neuralgic pains).
In terms of homeopathic relationships, Coffea is incompatible with Camphora and Cocculus. It serves as a complementary remedy to Aconitum napellus. If a patient is over-sensitized to Coffea, its effects can be antidoted by Nux vomica or Tabacum. The recommended dose is typically the 30c potency and higher. Because of its profound action on the nervous system, lower potencies are often less effective, whereas higher potencies (like 200c or 1M) can rapidly calm erratic nerve impulses and restore deep, restorative sleep.
