Understanding and Treating Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in Children

Children are highly sensitive to infections. When bacteria grow in a child's urinary organs (the body parts that carry urine), it can affect their bladder, kidneys, and ureters.

Common Symptoms of a UTI in Children

A child may seem ill for no obvious reason. Watch for these common signs:

• Fever/temperature

• Vomiting or diarrhea

• Loss of appetite (not feeling like eating)

• Urine that is cloudy or bad-smelling

• Difficulty urinating or needing to urinate frequently

• Complaints of abdominal pain or pain while urinating

General Homeopathic Medicines and Dosages

For general treatment, the following medicines and dosages are recommended for babies:

• Sabal Serrulata-Q: 1 drop in a cup of water, four times a day.

• Thuja Occidentalis-30: 1 drop in a spoon of water on alternate days.

Specific Homeopathic Medicines by Symptom

Below is a detailed guide to homeopathic remedies based on specific urinary symptoms:

A - C

• Apis: Use when urine is scanty or suppressed, accompanied by general edema (swelling), drowsiness, lack of thirst, and suffocation when lying down. Urine is albuminous with tube casts.

• Asparagus: Indicated for cystitis, an enlarged prostate, and catarrh of the bladder neck.

• Belladonna: Frequently indicated for involuntary urination during sleep in children.

• Benzoicum acidum: For an irritable bladder with dribbling of strong-smelling, highly colored urine that has a very offensive, horse-like ammoniacal odor.

• Berberis: For sticking, tearing pains in the renal region that worsen with deep pressure. Pains extend down the back, ureters, and into the bladder. The back feels stiff and numb. Symptoms include cutting in the bladder extending down the urethra, burning pain upon urination, and yellow, turbid, flocculent urine with whitish or red sediment.

• Cantharis: For persistent and violent urging to urinate with great tenesmus (straining). Urine passes only in drops and feels like molten lead passing through the urethra. Accompanied by intense burning and aching in the small of the back.

• Causticum: Indicated for paralysis of the bladder, involuntary urination while coughing, and nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) in children during their first sleep.

  • (Note: Squilla and Natrum muriaticum also treat involuntary spurting of urine during coughing.)

• Chimaphila: For catarrh of the bladder with offensive, turbid urine and great difficulty in starting to urinate.

D - L

• Digitalis: For strangury (painful, frequent urination) and frequent urging. Useful for night urging due to an enlarged prostate (relieved by lying down) and thick, yellow urethral discharge (useful in gonorrhea).

• Equisetum: For bedwetting with marked vesical irritation, cystitis, painful urination, and urging. The bladder feels sore and tender, with a great desire to pass water due to bladder pressure.

• Eupatorium purpureum: For dysuria (painful urination), frequent painful urging with either excessive or scanty flow of high-colored urine containing mucus. Accompanied by aching in the kidney region.

• Ferrum phosphoricum: For incontinence of urine due to sphincter weakness, leading to constant dribbling during the daytime.

• Hepar sulphur: For atony (lack of muscle tone) in the muscular coats of the bladder. Urine is voided very slowly by drops instead of a stream, taking a long time to empty. Also used for bedwetting.

• Ignatia: When urine is very profuse and pale.

• Kalium phosphoricum: Used when inability to retain urine is due to a paralytic/paretic condition of the bladder or nervous debility.

• Lycopodium: For turbid, bad-smelling urine that deposits red sand. The child cries before passing water due to lithic acid in the urine, and the diaper is stained yellow.

N - S

• Nitricum acidum: When urine smells as strong as a horse's urine. Accompanied by burning, straining, and a sensation as if sticks were in the urethra while urinating.

• Nux vomica: For painful, ineffectual efforts to pass urine with scanty discharge and burning. Also for strangury and dribbling in older people due to an enlarged prostate.

• Opium: For retention of urine caused by fright or after parturition (childbirth).

• Pareira brava: For constant urging to urinate with pain in the glans penis and down the thighs. The straining is so severe the patient sometimes has to get on all fours. Urine passes in drops and contains thick, viscid mucus.

• Petroselinum: For a sudden desire to urinate that causes severe pain if not attended to at once. Children will dance up and down and cry when this desire hits them.

• Phosphorus: Produces marked nephritis, with a profuse discharge of bloody urine containing casts.

• Pulsatilla: For cystitis with frequent urging to urinate (feeling as if the bladder is too full) and turbid urine. A useful remedy for cystic symptoms during pregnancy.

• Sepia: For an irritable bladder and involuntary escape of urine during the first sleep. Acidic and fetid urine with red sediment.

• Stramonium: Causes suppression of urine; highly useful for urine suppression during typhoid fever.

T - Z & Special Conditions

• Terebinthina: For dull, aching pains in the renal region, drawing pains, and distressing strangury. Urine is scanty, bloody, dark, smoky-looking, and smells like violets. May also involve excessive tympanites (abdominal swelling).

• Uva ursi: For burning, scalding urination where the urine stops suddenly as if a stone rolled in front of the internal urethral opening. Urine is ropy and bloody.

• Kreosote: Indicated when the patient urinates while dreaming about the act.

• After Labor (Childbirth): Hyoscyamus, Causticum, and Arsenicum.
