1. Aconite

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Incarcerated Hernia: Violent inflammation of the incarcerated hernia.

• Abdominal Sensations: Burning pains in the abdomen, feeling as if from hot coals.

• Sensory & Gastric: Extreme sensitivity to contact; nausea accompanied by bitter, bilious vomiting.

• Accompanying Agony: Cold sweat and extreme anguish.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Sensations: Numbness and tingling in all parts; numbness of the left arm with difficulty moving the head.

• Skin & Temperature: Skin is dry and burning hot; intense thirst for cold water.

• Face: Red face that sometimes turns pale; turns deadly pale immediately upon rising.

• Mind & Mood: Inappeasable, anxious impatience; beside himself, tossing about in agony; cannot bear pain, touch, or being uncovered.

2. Arsenicum Album

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Hernial Tumour: Gangrene of the hernial tumour.

• Stomach & Abdominal Pains: Violent burning pains in the stomach and abdomen accompanied by intolerable anguish.

• Sensations: Sensation of coldness in the upper abdomen; sensation as if the intestines are twisting.

• Physical Signs: Hard, bloated abdomen; constant vomiting.

• Stool: Thin, watery, black stools accompanied by profound prostration; simultaneous vomiting and stool (worse after eating or drinking).

General & Mental Symptoms

• Mind: Dread of death when alone or upon going to bed; intense anguish and restlessness driving the patient from place to place; tossing about.

• Vitality: Great, sometimes sudden prostration with a sinking of vital forces.

• Sensations & Thirst: Intense burning sensations (especially in inner organs, skin, and ulcers, which are relieved by heat); unquenchable, burning thirst—drinks often, but only a little at a time; cold water disagrees.

• Stomach: Disordered stomach after eating fruit or ice cream.

• Worse (<): Cold air, cold applications, cold food/drinks, after midnight (especially 1:00 AM to 3:00 AM).

• Better (>): Warm air, warm room, and hot applications applied to affected parts.

3. Aurum

Hernia Symptoms

• Inguinal Hernia: Protrusion of inguinal hernia with severe cramp-like pains; pressure in the abdominal ring as if a hernia would protrude while sitting.

• Pediatric Hernia: Inguinal and umbilical hernia in children, particularly when triggered or aggravated by crying.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Mind: Profound melancholy with a strong disgust for life and suicidal tendencies.

• Vision: Objects appear divided horizontally—can only see the lower half, while the upper half appears covered by a dark body.

• Bones: Caries of the nasal, palatine, mastoid, and ossicular bones; deep ulcers affecting bones following the abuse of mercury.

4. Belladonna

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Local Sensations: Feeling as if a hard body presses from within outward at the right inguinal ring (the area does not feel hard to the touch while sitting bent forward).

• Umbilical Region: Constriction around the navel, as if a lump or ball were forming.

• Colic & Distention: Severe colic, as if a spot in the abdomen were seized by nails; abdominal distention that is neither hard nor painful.

• Peritonitis & Visceral Inflammation: Marked by great distension, pungent heat, violent pain, and extreme sensitivity to touch and motion.

• Tenderness: Extreme abdominal tenderness aggravated by the slightest jar of the bed or chair; patient walks with extreme care to prevent jarring.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Pain Character: Pains (particularly in the abdomen and pelvis) appear suddenly, continue violently, and disappear just as abruptly.

• Mind & Head: Fear of imaginary things with an urge to run away; vertigo when stooping or rising after stooping (falling to the left or backwards) with vanishing sight and flickering before the eyes; intense throbbing headache (worse from noise, light, jarring, or leaning forward; better bending backward).

• Face & Circulation: Face glowing red, hot, and swollen; pulse accelerated, full, and bounding; violent throbbing of carotid and temporal arteries.

• Sleep & Sensitivities: Wants to sleep but cannot; easily catches cold in drafts, especially when uncovering the head or after a haircut.

5. Borax

Hernia Symptoms

• Infantile Hernia: Well-suited for hernia in infants who fail to thrive and present with brown, watery diarrhea.

General Symptoms

• Key Characteristic: Dread of downward motion (such as in a swing or cradle); easily startled and frightened by every small noise.

• Mouth: Aphthae on the tongue, inside of the cheeks, and throughout the mouth with great dryness; child cries when nursing.

• Urinary: Hot urine in infants; child dreads urinating and screams before each passage.

6. Bryonia

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Abdomen & Umbilicus: Hard swelling of the hypochondria and surrounding the navel; painful twisting sensation around the umbilicus accompanied by sharp stitches.

• Bowel: Obstinate constipation; stools are hard, dry, and appear as if burnt.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Mind: Highly irritable and easily angered; anxiety and delirium regarding business and finances (worse at night and after 3:00 AM); demands things immediately but refuses them when offered.

• Gastric: Dry mouth and tongue with a white coating; parched, dry lips with a constant desire to moisten them; intense thirst for large quantities of cold water (drinking cold water relieves the bitter taste and nausea); food sits heavily in the stomach; pit of the stomach sore to the touch; nausea and fainting upon sitting up in bed.

• Respiratory & Chest: Sharp, stitching chest pains—cannot bear to move or take a deep breath; coming into a warm room from cold air provokes a cough.

• Musculoskeletal: Joints are red, swollen, and stiff, with sharp stitching pains from the slightest movement; sore, bruised pain in the nape of the neck and lumbar region/small of back.

• Sensations: Sensation when lying in bed as if sinking deep down; heavy forehead with giddiness on stooping or rising; headache brought on by ironing or washing a perspiring face in cold water.

• Swellings: Dropsical swellings that increase during the day and diminish overnight.

• Worse (<): Any movement; complaints triggered when warm weather arrives after cold days.

7. Calcarea Carbonica

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Infantile Hernia: Indicated in hernia in infants; considerable abdominal distention accompanied by colic and constant rumbling/gurgling.

General & Constitutional Symptoms

• Constitution: Best suited for fair, plump children and individuals of a leuco-phlegmatic temperament with a tendency to become fat.

• Head & Teething: Head abnormally large with open/unclosed fontanelles; profuse head perspiration during sleep; itching scalp (children scratch their heads upon waking); difficult dentition.

• Stomach & Digestion: Milk disagrees and is vomited in curds or passed undigested in stool; pit of the stomach swollen and prominent, resembling an upturned saucer; sour taste in mouth, sour food, sour vomiting during dentition, and sour diarrhea.

• Female: Menses appear several days too early and are excessively copious.

• Extremities & Sensitivities: Feet are chronically cold and damp, as if wearing wet stockings; extreme sensitivity to cold air (feels like it goes right through the body); weakness and illness for days following coition; chronic rheumatism from working in water.

8. Carbo Vegetabilis

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Strangulated States: Symptoms resembling strangulation with a foul condition of the parts; excessive anxiety with deep abdominal uneasiness.

• Flatulence & Distention: Severe meteorism with loud rumbling; passage of offensive or odorless flatus; abdomen feels full to bursting (worse from the smallest amount of food; relieved by eructations and passing flatus).

• Sensations & Posture: Abdomen feels as though it is hanging heavily, causing the patient to walk bent over; clothing feels oppressive and can scarcely be tolerated; violent, persistent sour and rancid eructations.

General & Vital Symptoms

• Vital Exhaustion: Vital forces nearly exhausted; surface of the body is cold (especially from knees to feet); patient lies as if dead with cool breath, cold sweat on the limbs, and an intermittent, thready pulse.

• Air Hunger: Overwhelming desire to be constantly fanned; must have more fresh air.

• Head & Sensations: Head painfully sensitive to external pressure (especially from a hat—the sensation persists after removal as if bound by a cloth); vertigo when stooping or from flatulence (must hold onto support); gums sensitive when chewing.

• Chest: Burning sensation in the chest as if from glowing coals, accompanied by rawness and soreness.

• Dietary Aversions & Causes: Aversion to meat, fat, and milk (all cause flatulence); complaints arising from quinine abuse (suppressed chills/fever), mercury abuse, salt meats, putrid fish/meat, or rancid fats.

• Female: Morning leucorrhea that is milky, acid, and excoriating.

9. Cepa (Allium Cepa)

Hernia Symptoms

• Left Inguinal Hernia: Pressure in the left inguinal ring; particularly indicated when a left-sided groin hernia is markedly protruded and strangulated, accompanied by fever and restlessness.

General Symptoms

• Respiratory: Copious watery discharges from the nose and eyes; constant sneezing with profuse, acrid nasal discharge.

• Modalities: Symptoms are worse upon entering a warm room and better in the open air.

10. Cocculus

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Hernial Characteristics: Rupture worse on the right side; sensation of fullness in the groin with a feeling as if everything would give way; painful inclination to hernia, particularly upon rising from a seated position.

• Nature of Protrusion: Protrusion develops slowly, as if resulting from a paralytic state of the abdominal ring; indicated in umbilical and incarcerated hernia; useful after the failure of Nux vomica.

• Abdominal Distress: Feeling of laceration in the intestines; abdominal distention; vomiting accompanied by bruised pains in the intestines, obstinate constipation, severe weakness, and inability to stand.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Mind: Anxiety as if guilty of a serious crime; startles easily; hyper-sensitive mood where everything causes worry; nervous troubles and hysteria stemming from prolonged anxiety, night watching, and sleep loss.

• Sensation of Emptiness: Distinct sensation of hollowness or emptiness in internal cavities, especially the abdomen.

• Throat & Motion Sickness: Choking constriction in the upper throat that obstructs breathing and triggers a cough; severe nausea and illness from the motion of a carriage, boat/ship, or swing.

• Female & Air: Extreme debility during menses (can scarcely speak or stand); complete intolerance of open air, whether warm or cold.

11. Coffea

Hernia Symptoms

• Strangulated Hernia: Strangulated inguinal hernia where reduction (taxis) is made significantly easier following a cup of strong coffee.

General & Mental Symptoms

• Mind & Senses: Extreme mental activity with a rapid flow of ideas; quick to act; sleeplessness due to mental and physical excitation; all special senses acutely heightened (can read fine print more easily; acute hearing, smell, taste, touch, and heightened awareness of slight passive movements).

• Pain Response: Pains feel insupportable and drive the patient to total despair; desires to rub or scratch the affected part, but it is far too sensitive.

• Head & Teeth: One-sided headache feeling as though a nail were driven into the parietal bone (worse in open air); violent toothache relieved entirely by ice or ice-cold water, but only while in direct contact.

• Fever & Skin: Nervous chills aggravated by movement; external dry heat paired with internal chilliness; measly spots on the skin with dry heat, over-excitability, and weeping.

• Etiology: Ailments brought on by sudden emotional surges, particularly sudden pleasurable surprises.

12. Colocynthis

Hernia & Abdominal Symptoms

• Hernial Sensation: Pain in the groin resembling a hernia; upon pressure, a distinct sensation as if the hernia would recede; abdomen is distended and painful.

• Severe Colic: Violent, cramping colicky pains centered around the umbilicus; forces the patient to bend double (worse in any other position); pain recurs at 5- to 10-minute intervals.

• Relief Measures: Patient seeks relief by pressing the abdomen firmly against hard objects (such as corners of tables or bedposts); temporary relief obtained from passing stool or flatus.

• Gastric & Bowel: Dysentery-like diarrhea provoked immediately after ingesting any food or drink; great restlessness and loud screaming upon changing position.

Additional Symptoms

• Female: Intense boring or tensive ovarian pain forcing the patient to bend double with extreme restlessness.

• Urinary: Frequent urging with small quantities of thick, fetid, viscid, jelly-like urine.

13. Cubeba

Hernia Symptoms

• Femoral Hernia: Sensation of heaviness, downward pressure, and pain localized around the femoral ring.

• Modalities: Downward pressure and dragging weight are worse after walking, riding, lifting, and especially before and during menstrual periods.

14. Cuprum
