Arsenicum Album: Comprehensive Materia Medica

Arsenicum Album is a deeply acting remedy that affects every organ and system in the body. It is particularly indicated in debility, anemia, malarial exposure, and poorly nourished individuals with chronic illness.

Key Characteristic Triad

• Anxiety & Restlessness: Intense mental anguish accompanied by incessant physical movement, leading ultimately to extreme exhaustion.

• Prostration: Sudden, profound weakness and collapse where the patient appears cadaveric.

• Burning Sensations: Intensely hot, burning pains (as if coals of fire were in the affected part), which are almost universally relieved by heat.

Mental & Emotional Picture

• Anxiety & Fear: Marked fear of death, fear of being alone (wants company to distract from fear), and dread of the dark or evening. As mental illness progresses, the patient may no longer appreciate company.

• Restlessness: Constantly moves from one place to another. A child goes from nurse to mother and person to person. When too weak to get up or sit, the patient tosses and turns continuously in bed until exhaustion takes over.

• Depression & Mania: Extreme sadness with suicidal tendencies, delusions, sudden impulses, freaks, and insanity.

• Chronic State: In long-standing cases or mania, the patient may appear tranquil; however, a history of intense restlessness and anxiety in earlier stages remains a prerequisite.

• Fastidiousness & Sensitivity: Oversensitive to all sensory inputs and surroundings. Morbidly fastidious (the "gold-headed cane patient")—a patient in bed may feel great distress if a picture on the wall is slightly crooked.

Modalities & Conditions

General Modalities

• Worse From: Cold, cold damp weather, drafts, morning, evening/darkness, and specifically 1 – 2 PM and 1 – 2 AM.

• Better From: Warmth in general, hot applications, warm drinks, and being wrapped up warmly.

The Head Exception

• Congestive Headaches: Sensation of heat and burning inside the head as if it would burst, accompanied by a flushed, hot face. Ameliorated by cold applications and cool open air (even while the chilly body remains wrapped warmly in bed with open windows).

• External Head/Neuralgia: External complaints, facial neuralgias, and scalp conditions are ameliorated by warmth and wrapping up.

Thirst Dynamics Across Stages

• During Chill: Desires hot drinks and hot teas.

• During Fever/Heat: Thirst for small quantities, very often ("little and often"), taking just enough to wet the dry lips and mouth.

• During Sweat: Thirst transitions to a desire for large quantities of cold water, unquenchable as sweating increases.

• Chronic Cases: May be entirely thirstless.

Discharges, Secretions & Physical Traits

• Acridity: Secretions and excretions are thin and acrid, excoriating skin/mucous membranes and causing redness and burning (eyes, nose, bowel, vagina).

• Putridity: All discharges—stool, urine, menses, leucorrhea, expectoration, and ulcer fluids—have a foul, cadaveric odor resembling decomposing flesh.

• Hemorrhagic Tendency: Bleeds easily from any orifice (lungs, throat, bowels, kidneys, bladder, uterus). Discharges feature bright red blood initially, progressing to black blood or liver-colored clots in malignant states.

• Skin Appearance: Pale, waxy, clammy, sweating, cold, prematurely old, wrinkled, and shriveled.

• Eruptions & Itching: Severe itching and burning alternate at night—burning for a minute, scratching until raw, followed by a return of intense itching.

Systemic & Organ Symptoms

Head & Face

• Congestive, bursting headaches during intermittent fevers.

• Dropsical swelling of the face and scalp that pits on pressure, with light crepitation underneath.

• Highly sensitive scalp (hair cannot be combed).

• Epithelioma of the nose and lips.

• Waxy, pale, cadaveric face indicating a broken-down constitution.

Eyes & Nose

• Eyes: Acrid, excoriating conjunctivitis with burning; relieved by washing in cool water or dry heat. Baggy, pouch-like swelling of the lower eyelids. Corneal ulcers, hyperemic patches, and pterygium-like growths threatening vision. Sensitive to bright light.

• Nose: Frequent sneezing from draft, weather changes, or light. Cold begins in the nose and travels down into the throat and chest. Thin, excoriating coryza alternating with thick discharge.

Throat & Mouth

• Burning in the throat > warm drinks.

• Red, shriveled mucous membranes.

• Diphtheria with gray exudate, shriveled leathery membranes, prostration, and dry mouth.

Gastrointestinal System

• Gastritis: Intense stomach burning. Vomits all cold fluids immediately; temporary relief from small, frequent sips of warm water (which may also eventually be vomited). Extreme sensitivity to touch on the stomach, though the patient moves constantly due to restlessness.

• Abdomen: Distended, tympanitic, with gangrenous or erysipelatous inflammation and violent burning.

• Dysentery / Gastroenteritis: Involuntary, bloody, brown/black, or watery stools with a cadaveric, decomposing odor. Extreme prostration follows purging (cholera-like state).

• Rectum: Protruding hemorrhoids like dark grape clusters that burn like coals of fire; bleeding rectally with every stool; fissures of the rectum.

Respiratory & Cardiovascular Systems

• Respiratory: Asthmatic dyspnea, particularly after midnight (1:00 AM – 2:00 AM) or in bed, forcing the patient to sit up and hold the chest in mental anxiety. Pneumonia with rusty, liver-colored, offensive expectoration and burning chest pain. Cough triggered by cool air.

• Cardiovascular: Angina pectoris, endocarditis, hydropericardium, and rheumatic heart involvement. Palpitations from minor exertion. Pulse is frequent, small, trembling, or thread-like with cold sweat and pallor.

Genitourinary System

• Urinary: Post-partum urinary retention or suppression.

• Male: Dropsy/edema of the penis and scrotum (scrotum looks like a water bag). Syphilitic chancres or chancroids that burn, sting, and spread centrifugally (phagedenic).

• Female: Enormously swollen labia with erysipelatous, burning inflammation. Excoriating, profuse, thin leucorrhea that burns the thighs. Profuse, acrid menses with rectal stitches during menstruation. Palliative for advanced uterine and mammary cancers with burning, stinging pains.

Fever & Intermittent States

• Irregular periodicity: chills appear every other day, 4th day, 7 days, or every 2 weeks.

• Chill stage features bone aches, head congestion, purple fingers/toes, dry mouth, and a desire to be warmly covered near a fire.
