Thuja Occidentalis: Clinical Indications & Remedy Profile

Thuja Occidentalis is a key homeopathic remedy for sycotic constitutions, widely used for warts and skin growths, ill-effects of vaccination, and chronic urogenital issues.

Thuja Occidentalis: Clinical Indications & Remedy Profile

Constitution & Temperament

  • Diathesis: Hydrogenoid constitution (increased capacity to contain water; system retains fluid). Strumous and sycotic individuals.

  • Physical Characteristics: Lax muscles, light hair (especially in children); or lymphatic temperament in fleshy persons with dark complexions, black hair, and unhealthy skin.

  • Laterality: Strongly left-sided remedy (e.g., left arm vaccination, left ovarian complaints). Complaints are often one-sided.

Main Causes & Triggers (Etiology)

  • Vaccination: Bad, long-term effects of vaccination (vaccinosis).

  • Gonorrhea: Suppressed or maltreated gonorrhea.

  • Environment & Food: Exposure to rain, cold, damp weather, damp beds, fatty foods, cold items, or tea drinking.

Key Mental & Emotional Symptoms

  • Fixed Ideas & Illusions: Delusions regarding physical shape, imaginary conditions, or belief of having imaginary diseases (e.g., sensation that the abdomen is protruding due to a fetus moving inside).

  • Behavior: Aversion to touch, approach, or motion.

  • Dreams: Anxious dreams, particularly of dead people, falling, or suffering accidents.

  • Sensations: Sensation of levitation (floating).

Key Physical Symptoms by Body System

1. Skin & Excrescences (Warts)

  • Warts & Growths: Highly effective for sycotic excrescences (moistening and suppurating), condylomata, nævus ("mother's mark"), and polypi.

    • Fig warts: Warts with small necks.

    • Tubular warts: Long warts of uniform size throughout.

    • Fan-shaped fig warts: Large condylomata.

  • Skin Texture: Dry, whitish scales on the skin; discolored skin.

  • Perspiration:

    • Occurs only on uncovered parts (covered parts remain dry).

    • Sweat covers the entire body except the head.

    • Sweat occurs during sleep and stops immediately upon waking.

  • Nails: Soft, deformed, or brittle nails.

2. Head, Face, Ears & Mouth

  • Head: Vertigo when closing the eyes. Flushes of heat. Headache as if a nail were being driven into the head (clavus); headache caused by drinking tea.

  • Neuralgia: Facial neuralgia (tic douloureux); ciliary neuralgia with pain radiating upward and backward.

  • Ears & Nose: Hissing or kettle-singing noises in the right ear. Ozæna with thick green discharge; post-nasal catarrh and nasal polypi; catarrh of frontal sinuses.

  • Mouth & Teeth: Teeth decay at the roots, crumble, and turn yellow. Pressing pain in hollow teeth when blowing the nose. Bluish ranula under the tongue; ulcers on the right border of the tongue; varicose veins on the tongue with semilateral swelling.

3. Respiratory & Circulation

  • Respiratory: Troublesome, slight, long-lasting cough; asthma; whooping cough.

  • Circulation: Angina pectoris; aneurisms by anastomosis; swelling of blood vessels; drawing sensations in blood vessels.

4. Gastrointestinal & Abdomen

  • Abdomen: Distended abdomen that protrudes here and there (feels like the arm of a fetus). Incarcerated flatus; fluid heard rolling audibly into the stomach. Affections of the right abdominal ring; loins; inguinal glands.

  • Stools & Bowels: Early-morning diarrhea expelled forcibly with much flatus; loose bowels; frequent, small, painful bowel movements. Stool recedes after being partly expelled.

  • Rectum & Anus: Fistula in ano; anal fissures; piles (hemorrhoids) that worsen while sitting.

5. Urinary & Reproductive Systems

  • Urinary: Complaints during and after passing water; sensation of water trickling down the urethra; dribbling urine. Constant, repeated, strong urging to urinate, voiding large quantities. Severe cutting pain at the close of urination. Enuresis when coughing. Long-lasting gleet following gonorrhea.

  • Male Organs: Venereal affections, particularly on external organs; nocturnal erections and emissions; balanitis; balanorrhea; phimosis; orchitis; prostatitis.

  • Female Organs:

    • Severe left-sided ovarian pain (worse walking or riding, must sit or lie down; worsens at each menstrual period).

    • Vaginismus and extreme sensitiveness of the vagina, preventing coition.

    • Discharges: Greenish or yellow-staining leucorrhea.

    • Menses & Pregnancy: Dysmenorrhea, disparunia, imaginary pregnancy. Impending abortion at the end of the 3rd month (begins with 5 days of scanty blood discharge, becoming increasingly profuse). Swelling and sensitiveness of breasts during menses.

6. Extremities & Musculoskeletal

  • Extremities: Painful swelling and redness at the tips of fingers and toes. Stinging in limbs and joints; cracking in joints and cervical vertebrae (neck). Limbs easily "go to sleep".

  • Pain: Darting, burning pains in outer parts and joints; sensation as if flesh were beaten off the bones. Coxalgia and gonorrheal rheumatism.

Modalities (Aggravations & Ameliorations)

  • Worse ($<$):

    • Afternoon and after midnight.

    • In the evening.

    • Heat of the bed, warm room, or warm coverings.

    • Rain, cold, damp weather, damp beds, and food that increases body fluids.

    • Left side.

    • While urinating, chewing, walking, or sitting (piles).

    • Stretching the affected limb or motion.
